Indonesia and China are proceeding with plans to exchange Indonesia`s giant "komodo" lizard with a Chinese panda to act as a symbol of their long and close relationships.

"The two animals, which are both icons of the two countries, will be swapped to deepen the relations between the two countries," vice presidential spokesman Yopie Hidayat told newsmen here on Tuesday after a meeting between visiting Chinese Deputy Prime Minister Hui Liangyu and Vice President Boediono at the vice president`s office.

He said Hui`s visit was a follow up to various agreements made when Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono visited China and met with Chinese President Hu Jintao.

"The deputy prime minister said the exchange would soon be followed up and the vice president had welcome it," Hidayat said.

In connection with the exchange, the two countries would soon make preparations for moving the animals.

Yopie said the meeting between Vice President Boediono and Deputy Prime Minister Hui had been warm and discussions had followed up on the agreements made during President Yudhoyono`s recent visit to China (Antara)
